(This was written while Gordon Brown was Chancellor of the Exchequer)
The Chancellor of the Exchequer
IS a mighty powerful man.
He says he'll not raise taxes,
(He'll raise them if he can).
Raising taxes is - verboten
It's not a thing to do
Unless they're quietly hidden
From the sight of me and you.
Convoluted thinking
Is the stylish way he'll focus -
Upon the City's bankers
And their bankers’ hocus pocus.
While the topmost earners
Take their rest and sleep at ease
We'll find those hidden taxes
When we can't buy as we please.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer
IS a mighty powerful man.
He says he'll not raise taxes,
(He'll raise them if he can).
Number Ten is just next door
The PM says 'Please visit.'
The Chancellor then heaves a sigh
And dryly asks, 'What is it?'
'It's time we had a confab'
The PM primly states.
You soon suss out the two of them
Are not exactly mates.
Yet when they're seen together
And their thoughts are rather nasty
They smile and smile and smile and smile
At the bloody paparazzi.

He'll raise them if he can).
He keeps us on the straight and narrow
He keeps us from the brink
Of catastrophic happenings
When the pound begins to sink
Our cash is in his coffers
But that's not where it stays
It's largely spent on armaments
For milit'ry forays.
And spent on education
And on the NHS
It disappears like quicksand,
How? As good as mine, your guess.
The money is not his of course
It's taken from our purses
Not without some loud complaint
(He never reimburses).

Some are cautious, some are game,
Yet Chancellors are all the same!
